Academic Coaching

Academic Coaching is designed to help those who struggle with time management and organization. When one has difficulties in these areas, school, work, and home can suffer. Students receive direct instruction on how to manage their academic materials and daily workload. This provides the student with the skills and strategies for completing responsibilities such as bringing work to and from home and school. Large tasks are daunting for many. Individuals learn how to recognize and plan the small steps for completing large projects through explicit, systematic instruction in the use of a calendar.

The Coach helps the student recall successes from the day and discusses an action plan for the approaching days. This is an important part of the program as it teaches individuals to recognize and build on their success. Self advocacy skills play an essential role in one's life. Through discussion and role play, self advocacy skills are developed so that the student becomes confident in communicating their needs to others.

Sessions are structured, yet flexible. If a student is very far behind, or needs assistance with test preparation or paper completion, the time can be used to address those needs. Academic Coaching is not homework completion time, but a time for academic problem solving.

Developing the skills to manage the many responsibilities of school leads to reduced stress for the student and the family.
