Assessments

Assessments at Lee Pesky Learning Center are tailored to meet the individual's needs. Depending on the individual, an assessment can range from a brief screening to a thorough evaluation that takes several hours to complete. Through assessment, we identify learning strengths and needs.

We also look at how feelings and behavior affect learning. For each person we work with, we want to learn as much as we can. We then make recommendations and design interventions based on the needs of that person.

Assessment results may be used to:

•  Plan an intervention program at the Center.

•  Help the school better understand the student's needs.

•  Help plan workplace or school accommodations.

•  Give information to other professionals, such as doctors or counselors.

Who does the testing?

•  We have a team of evaluators. This team includes psychologists, school psychologists, counselors,

social workers, teachers, and interns. (Interns work only under the direct supervision of a licensed

    psychologist).

•  The needs of the client determine who is involved in the assessment and the extent of assessment

    necessary.

Assessments include the following:

•  Review of records and previous testing

•  Interviews with the student, parent(s), and teacher(s)

•  Educational Screening or Testing - looks at skills in reading, writing, and math.

•  Cognitive Testing - can include testing of: IQ, attention, memory, language, visual skills, and

    problem solving.

•  Psychosocial Measures - looks at the feelings and behaviors that can impact learning.

•  Written report of findings and recommendations for intervention and/or accommodations.

Some tips for parents:

Our goal is to see your child at his or her best.

•  We recommend that your child have a good night's rest and a healthy meal before the testing.

•  When talking with a child about the testing, you could say that we work with students of all ages

to help things go better in school. You may also want to tell him or her that we want to find out

about his or her strengths and how he or she learns best.
