Lee Pesky Learning Center CEO, Dr. Evelyn Johnson, recently spoke with Boise Public State Radio’s Gemma Gaudette about Pathways to Literacy, a program serving as a direct response to school closures amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Johnson is also joined by an LPLC parent, Maria Aguilar, and a tutor of the program, Jack Johnson.
When asked how this program has supported her son’s learning during the pandemic, Maria said that the program was very good for her son, Jesus, especially since he started kindergarten using 90% Spanish and 10% English. Maria also shared that Jesus experienced significant challenges with reading when he started the program.
By receiving FREE one-on-one tutoring in reading, Jesus entered the first grade with the foundational literacy skills necessary to succeed. Since Latinx students like Jesus were not afforded equal opportunities to learning even pre-pandemic, he and his mother, Maria, are receiving much needed support and resources during this critical time.
